Live Oak Wilderness Camp - Dirty Coast

Breaking down barriers.

Live Oak Wilderness Camp brings summer camp to life all year round through fun, friendship, and leadership development to connect a diverse community of outstanding New Orleans kids. Their unique summer camp and on-going leadership development programming connects a racially and socioeconomically diverse community of kids ages 9-13 who otherwise would have limited avenues to form such relationships and friendships. By breaking down barriers that keep kids from connecting in New Orleans, they want their summer camp community to be the place where hundreds of future leaders from all backgrounds come to have fun outdoors, learn about themselves and others, and grow in the skills needed to make change.

Founded in 2014 Live Oak Wilderness Camp takes place at the beautiful Camp Windhover in Crystal Springs, MS, approximately 2.5 hours from New Orleans. Campers step away from life in New Orleans to experience all the fun that camp provides: a lake, a rock wall, and an array of zany activities that allow kids to be kids. When campers get back from sleepaway camp in Mississippi, they then connect at four Live Oak Saturday sessions back in New Orleans.

Here is they have heard from our Live Oak families:

“Words can't express the gratitude and appreciation my family and I have for you guys. Y'all have had such a positive and wonderful affect on our family. He loves being a part of something with you. We love you all. Thank you for allowing him to have this experience. I think he's going to remember this for the rest of his life. You guys are amazing.”

The organization works with schools to provide scholarships for incredible kids who otherwise wouldn't have a chance to attend an 11-day camp like Live Oak. Over the last two years, Live Oak has brought summer sleepaway camp to life for nearly 300 outstanding kids from 50 public, private, parochial, and independent schools, including KIPP, Lusher, Newman, Firstline Schools, Metairie Park Country Day, ReNEW, and many others.

Their fundraising plan is simple: for every camper who receives a scholarship to attend camp, they fundraise $1,000 and combine it with a school's contribution of $500. Every $1,000 we raise sends one great kid to Live Oak summer camp. They want to continue to provide the very best leadership development for outstanding kids from across New Orleans.
