Gumbo

Gumbo is a timeless dish that has delighted the taste buds of New Orleans residents for centuries. This Creole classic has been passed down from generation to generation and continues to be a favorite amongst locals and visitors alike.

From humble beginnings, Gumbo has evolved into an iconic staple of the Louisiana cuisine, prized for its rich flavor and diverse ingredients. It is traditionally made with a combination of proteins such as crab, shrimp or chicken, vegetables like bell pepper, okra and celery, as well as a dark roux base- all simmered together in a flavorful broth.

The origins of Gumbo can be traced back to 17th-century France where they made similar dishes called "calas" as well as traditional West African stew recipes. But it wasn't until New Orleans was founded in 1718 that these two influences came together with local seafood and other ingredients to create the now famous gumbo we know today!

Gumbo holds a special place in the hearts of many New Orleanians; it's often served at weddings and other special occasions as well as everyday family dinners. There are countless variations on this classic dish so no matter what type you prefer - dark & spicy seafood gumbo or lighter & sweeter chicken & sausage - there’s something sure to satisfy every palate.

It's not just locals who love Gumbo either - numerous professional chefs have praised its deliciousness over the years! In fact, James Beard famously declared it “one of America's greatest culinary dishes". With that kind of endorsement, how could you not want to try making your own version?
