SBP, founded in March 2006 by Zack Rosenburg and Liz McCartney, after the couple volunteered in Louisiana’s St. Bernard Parish when it was deemed uninhabitable following Hurricane Katrina. Inspired by the collective spirit of the residents and their determination to rebuild, Zack and Liz launched the St. Bernard Project to help with recovery. With support the group grew from a three-person volunteer team into a nationally recognized organization in New Orleans leading in disaster recovery with a mission to “shrink the time between disaster and recovery”. In 2016 they officially changed their name to SBP to grow the organization beyond New Orleans and St. Bernard.
Since 2006, SBP has directly rebuilt homes for more than 2,140 families with the help of more than 130,000 volunteers in New Orleans, LA; Joplin, MO; Staten Island, NY; Rockaway, NY; Monmouth/Ocean Counties, NJ; San Marcos, TX; Columbia, SC; Baton Rouge, LA; Houston, TX; Brazoria County, TX; Puerto Rico; the Florida Panhandle; and the Bahamas.
