Lake Pontchartrain

Lake Pontchartrain is an iconic feature of the city of New Orleans, and it has played an integral role in its history and culture. Located on the north side of the city and stretching across three parishes, this brackish lake is connected to Lake Maurepas in the east via a channel known as the “ MRGO” or Mississippi River Gulf Outlet. Spanning over 600 square miles, Lake Pontchartrain is one of the largest bodies of water in Louisiana and has been dubbed "The Jewel of New Orleans."

Lake Pontchartrain holds a special place in many locals' hearts; providing scenic beauty and relaxation for generations. Whether you're sailing across its tranquil waters or taking in a beautiful sunset from its shores; this majestic body of water epitomizes Southern charm and hospitality. The lake's significance to the area can be seen all around with numerous lakeside parks such as Fontainebleau State Park that offer stunning views alongside recreational activities like fishing, swimming, bird-watching and picnicking.

In addition to being a recreational destination; Lake Pontchartrain also serves as an important source of fresh drinking water for the people of New Orleans. And with long stretches of marshland along both sides of its banks; this body of water also plays a vital role when it comes to protecting wetlands which serve as natural storm barriers during hurricane season.

Whether you're looking for relaxation, recreation or simply wanting to take in some breathtaking views; Lake Pontchartrain is sure to provide any visitor with memorable experiences! It serves as an enduring reminder that no matter how much time passes by; nature will always remain at the heart of what makes New Orleans such a unique and special place!
