The Kid Who Invented Bling

Christopher Dorsey was twelve years old when he signed with Cash Money Records. Twelve. He was a kid from the Freret neighborhood of Uptown New Orleans — his father had been killed in a robbery when he was twelve — and Birdman gave him a recording contract. He called himself Lil Doogie at first, then B.G. — Baby Gangsta — because that's exactly what he was: a child making music about a world that no child should have to navigate.

By fifteen, B.G. was recording with another teenage Cash Money signee named Lil Wayne as The B.G.'z. By nineteen, he was a member of the Hot Boys, and his 1999 album Chopper City in the Ghetto produced a song that would literally change the English language.

"Bling Bling" was more than a hit. It was a cultural moment — a word so perfectly suited to the late-nineties hip-hop aesthetic of flashy jewelry, platinum grills, and conspicuous wealth that it spread from New Orleans to the entire English-speaking world. In 2003, "bling" was added to the Oxford English Dictionary. A kid from Freret coined a word that ended up in Oxford. That's the reach of New Orleans hip-hop.

B.G. left Cash Money in 2002 over the same financial disputes that drove out Juvenile, Turk, and eventually Mannie Fresh. He founded his own label, Chopper City Records, and kept making music. But in 2012, he was arrested on federal firearms charges and sentenced to fourteen years. He served eleven, finally being released in September 2023 — with the extraordinary condition that all his future songs must be approved by the U.S. government before release.

B.G.'s story is the New Orleans hip-hop story in miniature: extraordinary talent, early exposure to violence, massive commercial success, financial exploitation, and the criminal justice system taking its pound of flesh. He signed his first record deal at twelve. He went to federal prison at thirty-one. He came home at forty-three. And the word he invented is still in the dictionary.
