Carl Weathers: From St. Aug to Apollo Creed

From St. Aug to Apollo Creed

Carl Weathers was born on January 14, 1948, in New Orleans, Louisiana. His father was a day laborer, and Carl earned an athletic scholarship to St. Augustine High School — the same legendary institution that produced Leonard Fournette and generations of New Orleans' Black leaders. Weathers was a football player first, and a good one. He went to San Diego State, helped the Aztecs go 11-0 and win the 1969 Pasadena Bowl, and then joined the Oakland Raiders as an undrafted free agent in 1970.

He played eight NFL games over two seasons with the Raiders and then three years in the Canadian Football League with the BC Lions. It was a respectable professional football career, but it wasn't where destiny was pointing. Carl Weathers was about to become one of the most iconic actors in Hollywood history.

Apollo Creed and Beyond

The story of how Weathers got the role of Apollo Creed is perfect: during his audition alongside Sylvester Stallone, he criticized Stallone's acting — and that brashness is exactly what won him the part. Apollo Creed in Rocky became one of the great characters in American film — charismatic, dangerous, and unforgettable. Weathers played Apollo across four Rocky films from 1976 to 1985.

He followed Rocky with Predator alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1987 and then reinvented himself as a comedy actor with Happy Gilmore in 1996. Decades later, he found a whole new generation of fans as Greef Karga in The Mandalorian, earning an Emmy nomination and proving that talent doesn't have an expiration date.

A New Orleans Life

Carl Weathers died on February 2, 2024, at seventy-six. From a day laborer's household in New Orleans to St. Aug to the Raiders to Apollo Creed to the Mandalorian — Weathers lived one of those American lives that sounds made up until you realize the man was simply that talented, that determined, and that unwilling to let anyone else define his ceiling.
