For live music in New Orleans tonight, do what locals do: open WWOZ's Livewire calendar, or turn on 90.7 FM and wait for them to read it. That's the most complete list of who's playing where, and it covers every night of the week, including the slow ones.
And Tuesday is supposed to be a slow one. In most cities it's the night the bar is empty and the bartender is doing inventory. Here, a Tuesday can be one of the best nights of your trip, because the crowd is mostly people who live here.
How Locals Actually Find a Show
The Livewire Music Calendar is WWOZ's listing of live music around greater New Orleans. Venues and artists send in their shows, and the station edits them and checks dates with the venue when something looks off. There's an online version and an on-air version, though the station notes it can't read every listing on air every day.
Most of us have a ritual with it. Check the calendar after dinner. See a name you recognize. Text two friends. One of them already heard about it. That's the system.
WWOZ has been doing this kind of thing since it went on the air Dec. 4, 1980, broadcasting for a while from a two-room apartment above Tipitina's. We wrote about the station's history if you want the full story. If you love it, wear it: our WWOZ Listen to Your City shirt is our tribute to the station.
Tuesday Staples
Weekly gigs come and go, and a residency that was sacred for twenty years can end with one text message. So check the calendar before you go. These are the Tuesday regulars we could confirm in 2026 listings.
Early: The Jazz Museum Balcony
The New Orleans Jazz Museum at the Old U.S. Mint runs a weekly Tuesday concert series at 5 p.m., played from the museum's balcony at the edge of the French Quarter. Live music from a balcony at the end of the workday is a pretty good argument for skipping happy hour.
Dinner Hour: Tuesdays at Twilight in City Park
City Park moved its long-running Twilight concert series to Tuesdays, and the City Park Conservancy put it plainly: "Tuesday is the new Thursday at City Park." This fall's shows run 6 to 8 p.m. indoors at the Pavilion of the Two Sisters in the Botanical Garden, at $15 a person. Food and drinks are sold there, and the park is cashless, so bring a card.
Late: d.b.a. on Frenchmen
Trumpeter Leon "Kid Chocolate" Brown and saxophonist Khris Royal have a weekly Tuesday session at d.b.a. on Frenchmen Street. If you're new to Frenchmen, our guide on where the locals go for live music will get you oriented.
The One Everybody Asks About: Rebirth at the Maple Leaf
For 29 years, starting in 1991, the Rebirth Brass Band played Tuesday nights at the Maple Leaf Bar on Oak Street, according to OffBeat. OffBeat called it an "only in New Orleans" experience. The pandemic shut it down in March 2020. Call the Maple Leaf before you go and ask what's on that night.
If You're Here More Than One Night
A few other weekly regulars, confirmed in 2026 listings, worth building a week around:
- Thursday: the Soul Rebels at Le Bon Temps Roulé on Magazine Street, a decades-long tradition just down Magazine from our Uptown shop.
- Sunday: start the afternoon at a second line, from late summer through spring (here's what that is, and WWOZ posts the schedule), then end it with the Hot 8 Brass Band at the Howlin' Wolf on South Peters, late, per JamBase listings through the fall.
A Few Tuesday Rules
Bring cash for the band. Plenty of places charge a small cover or pass a bucket, and the musicians are the reason you're there.
Stay for the second set. The first set is often the band warming up. The second is the one people talk about the next day.
Eat first. A great music bar is not always a great place for dinner, and the kitchen may be closed by the time the band gets going.
And don't panic if the 9 p.m. show starts at 10. Showtimes here are more of a suggestion. Our Listen To Your City shirt was written for exactly this: put the phone away and pay attention to what the city is telling you.
