Peyton Manning: The Newman School Kid Who Became the Greatest Quarterback Ever

The Newman School Kid Who Became the Greatest Quarterback Ever

Peyton Williams Manning was born on March 24, 1976, in New Orleans, Louisiana — the middle son of Archie Manning, who was already a New Orleans football legend. Peyton grew up Uptown, attended Isidore Newman School, and wore number 18 in honor of his older brother Cooper, whose football career was cut short by spinal stenosis. From the beginning, Peyton Manning played with something to prove and someone to honor.

At Newman, he was the most recruited quarterback in the country. He chose Tennessee over Ole Miss — his father's school — and spent four years rewriting the Volunteers' record books: 11,201 passing yards and 89 touchdowns. He won the Maxwell Award and the Davey O'Brien Award as a senior and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2017.

The NFL's Greatest Regular Season Quarterback

The Indianapolis Colts selected Manning first overall in 1998, and what followed was eighteen seasons of quarterbacking so precise, so intelligent, and so relentless that he redefined the position. Five NFL MVP awards — more than anyone in history. Fourteen Pro Bowl selections. He set the record for most passing touchdowns in a single season with 55 in 2013.

He won Super Bowl XLI with the Colts and Super Bowl 50 with the Denver Broncos — bookending his career with championships and proving he could win in two different systems with two different teams. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2021.

The Manning Dynasty

Peyton's story is inseparable from his family's. Archie was a beloved Saint. Cooper became a successful businessman. Eli won two Super Bowls with the Giants. And now Arch Manning, Cooper's son, is quarterbacking at Texas. Four generations of Mannings, and it all started in New Orleans — on the Newman School field, in an Uptown household where football wasn't just a sport but a family language.
