We’re finding ourselves at odds with trying to move on with business as usual when an act of terror rocks a community like ours, but that’s the response necessary at a time like this. We feel it’s imperative to prove that this has not broken our spirit. Sadly, tragedy hasn’t been a stranger to New Orleans. We’ve now begun the year that marks the 20th anniversary of Katrina and the global news agencies are most likely gathering their interviews and footage in preparation for a recap, but we start this year with a tragedy we could never have imagined.
As a people that call this strange, beautiful, and complicated place home, we recognize that those we welcome here keep the lights on. We might not do everything right as a city, but we excel at being a host. We embrace those we don’t know like family, share our kindness, and set a global example of how to live a full life.
The time to celebrate the culture and people below sea level we cherish so much is on the horizon and whether we’re ready or not, Twelfth Night comes Monday to begin our Carnival season. Normally this is our favorite time of the year that brings so much joy, creativity, and celebration of our community’s shared experiences displayed proudly, but there’s no way to brush away this stain or wish away what we’ve just witnessed. Hopefully a sense of togetherness can counter balance this great loss and allow us to grieve the only way we know how- taking our hearts to the river to let her wash over us and give us strength to keep going.
Thank you for all of the kind words of support these past few days from everyone who loves this city as much as we do. Our hearts are with the families and friends of those whose time here has been cut short. They deserved so much more. We can’t believe that we have to open our shops or share our newest designs, but hopefully you will allow us to continue to offer a sense of brevity like we’ve done so many times before to make living in this city a little more manageable.
Be A New Orleanian. Wherever You Are.
