What Makes a Dirty Coast Shirt Different?

Most New Orleans T-shirts are made for people passing through. Ours started as a reaction to that. Dirty Coast began with a simple idea: make shirts we actually wanted to wear, shirts that felt like New Orleans instead of a souvenir stand on Bourbon Street. Twenty years and more than 400 designs later, that's still the test every new shirt has to pass.

Ideas come from bar conversations and from whatever absurd thing the city did that week. Then we hand them to designers and illustrators like Avery Lawrence and Burton Durand, who turn a phrase into something you'd want on your chest. Our first designs were screen printed by Diego at La Chiva on Tchoupitoulas, and we still treat printing like a craft.

Our Best-Selling New Orleans Shirts

Over the past year, the shirts people reached for most were a mix of old favorites and new jokes. The Rougarou Swamp Legend gives Louisiana's favorite swamp monster the respect he deserves. King Gator, one of our earliest designs, made with New Orleans designer Alexa Pulitzer, is still in the top ten. The Vampire Lestat World Tour, officially licensed with AMC, has been one of the year's most popular.

And then there's Be A New Orleanian. Wherever You Are., the line Blake sketched on a sticker in Lafayette after Katrina. It became the way scattered New Orleanians found each other, and it's still the most honest thing we've printed.

Finding the Right Shirt

Looking for something specific? Saints fans should head to our black and gold collection. Food people will find their people in For The Foodies, and the music crowd lives in For Music Lovers. If you moved away and miss home, the For The Ex-Pats collection was built for you. Retired designs come back to life, printed to order, in From The Vault.

Every shirt here is designed by people who live in New Orleans and sold out of our shops on Magazine Street and Chartres Street. Wear it until it falls apart. That's what they're for.
